Cardwell World Cup Flowers and Plants
Millions of people will be glued to the TV watching the football from Russia and picking their favourites to win the coveted trophy.
But a local garden centre has come up with its own World Cup – a World Cup of Flowers!
Green-fingered staff at Cardwell Garden Centre, near Gourock have compiled a list of the official flowers and plants of countries playing in the World Cup and are rooting for their own favourites.
The centre has a special display of flowers featuring chamomile for hosts, Russia, daisies for Denmark, carnations for Spain, lavender for Portugal, chrysanthemums, for Japan, dahlias for Mexico and roses for England.
Cardwell’s retail general manager, Paul Carmichael said: “Everyone seems to be talking about the World Cup and we’re able to see players from countries all over the world.
‘That got us talking about which plants and flowers are officially recognised as representing countries playing in the World Cup and did a bit of online research.
“We discovered we had quite a few of these flowers and plants already on sale at Cardwell, so we decided to have our own World Cup of Flowers.
“Although, fans singing: ‘Come on you, chrysanthemums’ doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as the tradition football chants!”
