Cardwell’s Survival Guide to Beat the Boredom – Part 3
The mower the merrier in your garden!
Well folks, the lockdown continues and we hope you are all keeping safe and well.
A good way of beating any boredom you may be feeling and to keep active and get some fresh air is by getting out into your garden. So, here’s some handy hints from our gardening expert, George Irvine. Here’s what he advises:
Now that we’ve had a few good days and the sun has been shining, the lawns and other grassy area of the garden are beginning to look a little unkempt.
Because of this, it’s time to get the lawn mower out of hibernation. But first, there are a few things that need to be done.
Make sure the mower is clean and if using an electric machine, check the cables and make sure there are no cuts or nicks along its length.
Also make sure that your residual current circuit breakers are working as you certainly don’t want to get an electric shock.
Secondly, have a look at the grass. If you have any areas that appear a bit soggy, then use a garden fork to make some holes about four to six inches deep and this will improve the drainage and also let air get to the roots of the grass. You can rock the fork back and forward to widen the holes. If you can, brush some sharp sand or fine grit into the holes.
Raise the blades of the mower to their highest setting and leave the grass an inch or more high.
If you have one, use your strimmer to trim the grass around the edges or alternatively, use a half-moon tool to tidy up the edges using a plank of wood to make sure the edges are straight and neat.
Finish by raking up any cut grass and placing it in your compost bin, or consign it to your brown bin.
All this work will make your lawn much more tidier for Easter and your garden will look nice and neat when you sit outside and enjoy the nice weather, the birds and just being in the open air.
It will do you the world of good!
